Trying to Move to a VLAN Setup

I have a pretty large home network with over 80 devices on my network (Cameras, Media Components, iot, nas, etc.). I’m trying to move to Vlans and have 3 asus routers (gt5300) setup in mesh mode with a 24 port switch (FS) and at least 4 unmanaged switches (poe and non-poe). I just purchased a protectli vault and have proxmox with Opnsense and plan on replacing the asus routers with grandstream APs.

Do unmanaged switches come with VLAN support or will I have to replace them too?

I just used the HNG video for Opnsense using a protectli vault and am unsure of what hardware I need to replace in order to move to a better network.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry, I just saw this. I am working on setting up my new forum so I haven’t been looking on here for new posts. haha.

I’m hoping that others will also chime in as well at some point because as my audience grows, it’s getting harder for me to keep up with questions.

To answer your question, unmanaged switches do not support VLANs. They don’t usually have any web interface at all since there is no need for one. Every device connected to an unmanaged network is on the same network.

Interestingly, if you plug an unmanaged switch into a port of another switch that’s assigned to a VLAN such as VLAN 10, all of the devices on the unmanaged switch will also be on VLAN 10 even though the switch does not support VLAN tagging (the other switch will be tagging the traffic).

Once you have managed switches, you can assign VLANs to your heart’s content. They are relatively inexpensive these days especially if you are ok with not getting certain named brand devices (even some name brand switches can have a decent price on basic managed switch functionality).
